The Wheel — laid open
Nothing about this wheel is hidden. This page describes exactly how it works — completely, verifiably, in plain language. The Situationist Edition is an idea by Greta Kühnast and Jan Pleitner.
The rules
- Every visitor may spin the wheel three times per day.
- After every spin you may buy the edition at exactly the price shown.
- Spinning again replaces the previous result — what falls last, stands.
- The wheel is the only way to buy: there is no other price, no negotiation, no discount code.
How the numbers are made
- Every wheel is unique: its 12 price fields are drawn fresh for every spin on our server, using the operating system's cryptographic random number generator (
random_int). Neither we nor your browser can influence where it lands. - The advertised minimum price is always one of the fields — the promise "from X €" is a real chance on every spin, and the wheel never shows a price below it.
- The highest field never exceeds twice the edition's guide price.
- The fields in between are drawn log-uniformly: lower prices appear more densely, high anchors are rarer — but every field has exactly the same 1-in-12 chance of being hit.
The seal — verify every result
Before the wheel starts turning, the server writes the finished result into a cryptographic seal and shows it to you: seal = SHA-256(fields | landing segment | nonce). After the wheel has landed you can recompute this hash from the displayed values and convince yourself that the result was fixed before the animation began — the theatre never decides, it only performs. Every spin is stored with its seal.
What we store — and what we don't
- No tracking, no analytics, no advertising, no cookies.
- Your IP address is stored only as a SHA-256 hash to enforce the daily limit; the address itself is never saved.
- Your browser keeps your current session (spins used, last result) locally on your device.
- 10% of every sale goes to emerging artists — every sale and donation is listed in the public transparency ledger.
Why a wheel?
Because the question "what is art worth?" has no honest fixed answer. The wheel replaces negotiation with fortune, haggling with a moment of chance — openly, playfully, and under rules everyone can read on this page. If you ever find anything about this system that is not disclosed here, write to us. We will publish it. The art-historical context — from Duchamp's roulette to the auction spectacle — lives on the page "The Concept".
